A charging hub built only for electric heavy goods vehicles is now open at Magna Park in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. The site, called Electroway, has 32 DC charging bays rated up to 400 kW and about 180 secure truck parking bays, according to charger maker Kempower, which supplied the hardware and calls it the UK's largest public electric HGV hub.

Who runs it

Keoma Energy develops and operates the site, Guardian Smart Infrastructure Management funded it, and Bosch Road Services is the technical operator, according to the investor's press release. Bosch's platform lets fleets reserve a specific charger as well as a parking bay, and the release says Electroway is the first UK site on Bosch's network to combine truck parking with charging.

How fast it charges

Kempower says 2.4 MW of charging capacity is shared dynamically across the site. At up to 400 kW, a truck can take on around 300 kWh during a 45 minute break, which Kempower says can add up to 150 miles of range depending on the vehicle. Electroway's own site page lists eight 300 kW chargers and 24 150 kW chargers, plus AC points for refrigerated trailers. These are the companies' own figures.

What comes next

A second phase is due early next year and is expected to add megawatt level charging of up to 1.2 MW, Kempower says. Keoma Energy plans about 20 more truck stops of this kind in the UK over the coming years. Magna Park sits near the M1, M6 and M69 and hosts around 50 depots, which is why the operators picked it.
