Volvo Cars' third-quarter revenue was SEK 66.9 billion, and adjusted operating income was SEK -3.7 billion
Volvo Cars reported third-quarter revenue of SEK 66.9 billion and an adjusted operating loss of SEK 3.7 billion. Fully electric cars were 32 percent of retail sales, and the company plans a lower-priced electric car on SPA3 with deliveries after summer 2027.

Volvo Cars' third-quarter revenue was SEK 66.9 billion, down from SEK 86.4 billion a year earlier, and operating income excluding joint ventures, associates, and items affecting comparability was SEK -3.7 billion. The press release published on 23 October 2026 calls that second figure the quarter's EBIT on that basis, and it prints a matching margin of -5.6 percent, against 6.7 percent a year earlier. Fully electric cars were 32 percent of sales in the quarter, against 22 percent. The interim report prints the same revenue, the same SEK -3.7 billion, and the same 32 percent.
The unadjusted operating line is a larger loss. The press release says operating income was SEK -5.6 billion, against SEK 6.4 billion a year earlier, and the EBIT margin was -8.4 percent, against 7.4 percent. Basic earnings per share were SEK -1.63, against SEK 1.75. The interim report matches those lines. It says reported EBIT included Polestar's second-quarter losses, SEK -0.9 billion, and items affecting comparability of SEK -1.1 billion. The SEK -3.7 billion is the result with joint ventures, associates, and those items taken out. It is not a second profit number.
Volume fell with revenue. The interim report says retail sales decreased 11 percent to 141.3 thousand cars, from 158.5 thousand. Wholesale volume declined 19 percent to 130.8 thousand, from 161.0 thousand. The report marks the revenue change at -23 percent. The press release says free cash flow was SEK -8.9 billion, against SEK -4.3 billion. The interim report's highlights call the same SEK -8.9 billion "operating and investing cash flow."
China is the market the company describes as the sharpest drop. The press release says revenues in China fell by almost 50 percent from a year earlier. The chief executive's letter in the interim report uses the same phrase. The report's quarterly revenue table, in millions of SEK, prints China at 7,498, against 14,075 a year earlier. Retail sales in China were 18.6 thousand cars, against 32.8 thousand, a change the table marks at -43 percent. Those are two different series: revenue in the China line, and cars retailed. The press release says the result also reflects tariffs and the removal of consumer incentives for electrified cars in the United States, a negative revaluation of SEK 1.1 billion in CAFE credits, negative raw-material developments, and the Polestar item of SEK -0.9 billion.
Europe is the region the company points to as the offset. The press release says Volvo Cars had a battery-electric sales share of 45 percent in Europe in the quarter. The chief executive's letter says Europe was the sole positive contributor to operational performance, with a battery-electric sales share of 45 percent in the third quarter. The group figure is the separate 32 percent. Electrified cars, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid together, were 53 percent of retail sales, against 46 percent, in both the press release and the retail table.
The cost response is a company plan, and the headcount in it is the company's. The press release says Volvo Cars aims to reduce an additional SEK 5 billion in indirect spend and variable costs, on top of earlier programs. It says those actions will lead to a structural reduction of approximately 2,500 jobs globally, of which 2,000 are based in Sweden, by ending consultant contracts, through natural attrition, and by targeted exit packages. The interim report's letter from the chief executive states the same SEK 5 billion, the same approximate 2,500 jobs, and the same 2,000 in Sweden. The press release says the full financial effects will be realized by the end of 2027, and that overall indirect spend will then be almost 25 percent lower than in the 2024 financial year. The letter says the effects will be realized by the end of next year, with total indirect spending almost 25 percent lower versus 2024. This story uses that company figure for jobs. It does not import a headcount from another outlet.
The product plan that sits beside the loss is a 2027 car, not a third-quarter delivery. The press release says the EX60 has more than 50,000 European orders. It says that in 2027 Volvo Cars will introduce its next global battery-electric car, aimed at a large, lower-priced segment in Europe, with the first customer deliveries starting after summer. The chief executive's letter is more specific about the platform: "In 2027 we will introduce our next BEV car based on the SPA3 platform, targeting a large lower-priced market segment, with the first customer deliveries starting after summer." Electrek reported it as the second SPA3 model, after the EX60. Autocar reported the same plan and wrote that Volvo has not given firm details of the car. The press release says three new cars will be revealed in 2027, one for Europe and two for China, inside 13 new cars by the end of 2030.
"In the short term, with severely challenged volumes, we need to reinforce our turnaround plan with additional decisive actions, lowering our break-even point and improving cash flows to make us more resilient," Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive, said in the press release. The letter says the investment peak is behind the company, at what it calls a normal level, an approximately 30 percent reduction compared with 2024. The press release says the same. Neither document prices the lower-priced electric car, and neither names it.
Analysis
These figures describe the quarter that ended on 30 September 2026. They are not a forecast, and this article is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security. The SPA3 car's first deliveries are after summer 2027, so they are not in this revenue. The approximate 2,500 jobs are a planned reduction, including consultant contracts and attrition, not a count of people who have already left.
